Maki is a young Caucasian boy with mismatched eye colors; green for the right and a red for the left. His hair is silvery gray and it is short, barely passing his chin on all sides of his head. He’s pale, and he wears a banana yellow hoodie that’s inverse is bright orange, as well as a shirt which is a darker orange. He also wears long, purple jeans which has an orange flame design on the bottom of the left pant leg. He also wears teal colored shoes that have white shoelaces. Around his neck there’s usually a Native American looking necklace with a few feathers and an eagle bead on it. It was given to him by Amber, and he cherishes it. On the surface he’s a calm, shy, and young boy. Since he’s shy he’s also very quiet, and he spends most of his time learning Japanese manners and phrases through saying them out loud as he reads them from in a study book. He’s intelligent and tends to not show much emotion because he is a Contractor, and like every Contractor in the series, they believe themselves to be rational and unable to have emotions once they make their contracts. That ideal though is implanted into a Contractor and is usually shown to be false or simply just the Contractor’s own arrogance since many Contractors do have emotions, they just don’t recognize or admit it. Maki is one of those Contractors as he shows a strong, if not obsessive, passion for another Contractor named Amber. Since he believes everything she has told him about Contractors and the cause for the Evening Primrose, he believes himself to be perfect for her, and tends to have psychotic bouts of emotion when she is mentioned and he isn’t around to protect her from other Contractors and humans he considers a threat. That of course especially goes to the Contractor, Hei, who Amber herself is solely interested in. Maki hates all humans in general, unless they show some kindness to him. While Maki may be short and still young for a Contractor, his contract is definitely a deadly force to be reckoned with. Maki’s is able to plan his contract before using it, which consists of the use of his handprints to leave unseen markings on solid surfaces. Then later he can use his contract by moving his finger in front of his nose and across his face to have the hidden handprints glow into a hot explosion, which destroys everything around it. The more handprints Maki creates in that certain area, the more they glow together and the bigger and more deadly the explosion is. He also has control on which handprints he can spontaneously combust. Another strength Maki has is his fierce loyalty and determination to do what he wants or needs to do for the EPR. He’s also fast and smart enough to get even the best Contractors into a trap when he uses a good enough trap strategy against them. Same as any Contractor, Maki’s contract has a remuneration. Remuneration is a payment a Contractor must pay in return for the use of their powers. Their remuneration is different for each Contractor, and Maki’s remuneration happens to be drinking hot milk. If the milk were to get too lukewarm, then it would become moot and Maki would have to heat up the milk again instead of drinking it. Another notion about Maki’s weaknesses is that yes, he is short and looks very easy to beat up if you really wanted to. Still, his contract makes up for his height. What his true weakness is, is Amber. She has taught him many things that he now treats like his very own religion, and he rarely crosses those lines to step away from what Amber has told him, and what he had taken from his own thoughts about all of the Syndicates. He would do anything for Amber if she asked him, even if it meant his own death. Maki wants nothing more but Amber being his, and for him to be protecting her. When Maki first appears in the series, he is standing and holding Amber’s hand as they wait at the side of the road. Once a car comes, they both go inside even as a member of MI6 comes running towards them. By the time she gets there, both Maki and Amber are gone, but the MI6 agent, April, is still in hot trail of them as she flags down another car to chase them. Yet even as she gets in and is on the phone with another member of the MI6, November 11, there’s an explosion which was caused by Maki’s handprints. That explosion is considered a terrorist attack and later Maki goes back to the scene of it, jumping up and trying to get the necklace Amber gave him off of a tree from where it had gotten stuck on a high up branch he could not reach. As he was jumping, Li comes and picks it off the tree for him, and ties it back into a necklace before putting it into Maki’s hands. He tells Maki to “Please protect your smile,” and Maki asks why before shaking himself and saying he shouldn’t be rude. He then says thank you before Li asks how it had gotten up there. Maki just says thank you again after a long silence, and he leaves. Later, there are more ‘bombings’ around the city and Maki causes them all with his contract. November 11, wanting revenge, goes after Maki but falls into a carefully planned trap by Maki in which November 11 is tricked. He is then taken by Maki and another Contractor, Amagiri, to a secret location. They tie the man up and Maki studies his Japanese phrases through a book by reading it like a chant. November 11 talks about it in conversation, and Maki explains the reason he studies manners so hard is because Amber made him feel like they meant something. He began to feel strange when he said them thanks to her, and he received meaning through those words. He then goes on to talk about how Contractors are the more superior evolution of humans, and how they should be the ones with the higher priorities while the humans are ruled by them. Meanwhile, another member of MI6, a Doll named July, is looking for November 11 with the chief police officer Kirihara Misaki and other cops under her. Amagiri offers November 11 a chance to join them at the Evening Primrose, but he refuses and Kirihara and the cops come rushing in. Maki distracts them with explosions from his contract before he and Amagiri escape from the building. Amagiri then tells Maki to go back to their secondary meeting point while he goes to find Amber and their last key. Maki gets angry and asks why Amber would wait so long for another Contractor when he has him to love her. Amagiri tells Maki those orders are from Amber before leaving. Maki though ignores him and goes to find Amber himself. Maki ends up finding Li again, only to find he’s injured from a shot wound to the leg. Yet he’s confused why Li is going towards where Amber is supposed to meet with the key… And it clicks. Maki gets enraged even worse, understanding that Li is Hei, and Hei is the key. He flips out and attacks Hei, wanting to kill him so Hei won’t go and meet Amber, taking away her love. Maki loves Amber so much, he understands what he feels is pure jealousy. Hei escapes from Maki’s attack, and Maki is suddenly attacked himself by November 11, Kirihara and July. Maki runs into an abandoned apartment as November 11 tells Kirihara to go after Hei. He then goes into the building with July, knowing the Doll whose medium is glass will protect him. Maki had immediately upon entering the apartment strewn his handprints all over by touching everything he could before racing upstairs and wrapping himself up in the curtains. As November 11 and July head towards him, Maki lets lose his contract and the other two evade the spontaneous explosions. Maki all the while babbling about how much he loves Amber, and how no other Contractor is perfect for her except for him. After Maki demolishes the entire building except the room he’s in, he goes to the door and opens it – Only to find November 11 at the door, still alive. November 11 is surrounded by rain, and he is able to stab Maki with an ice spike to the chest. As Maki lies dying, he sadly says goodbye to Amber – Even when he so dearly hates that word.
